Inflation is a monetary phenomenon; therefore, its cure lies
in a monetary policy that reduces the quantity of money to levels consistent
with output. Mexico’s galloping inflation is a phenomenon created by the
central bank through prolonged expansionary policy over the last four years.
Neither the significant increase in fuel prices nor the peso’s depreciation are
factors that can produce the sustained increase in consumer prices. An excess
of money pumped out by the Bank of Mexico is the genuine root of the inflation.
